Angelina Jolie Rafah visit Egypt Gaza aid

American actor, activist and former UN special envoy for refugees Angelina Jolie has visited the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza to check on the humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza and meet injured Palestinians transferred to Egypt for treatment.

On Friday, Jan. 2, accompanied by US State Department and Egyptian officials, Jolie met with Egyptian Red Crescent workers, aid truck drivers and humanitarian organizations at the border to assess aid deliveries to Gaza, according to local media.

Jolie also visited injured Palestinians receiving treatment in Egypt in al-Arish Hospital and al-Mehwar Hospital.

Jolie said she was "honored" to meet aid volunteers at the crossing.

A Red Crescent volunteer told Jolie that "there are thousands of aid trucks just waiting" at the border crossing as she toured warehouses stocked with undelivered aid and medical supplies.

As part of the “ceasefire” between Israel and Hamas that began on Oct. 10, 600 aid trucks were meant to enter Gaza per day.

However, the Rafah crossing remains closed on the Gaza side under Israel’s control despite the “ceasefire,” and Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu had said the border crossing will be opened only for Palestinians to leave Gaza.

Jolie said that the international community must take serious steps to end the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza and deliver more aid into the strip as quickly as possible, local media reported.
