Azerbaijan Has Signed A New AI Deal With Israel Despite Its Genocide In Gaza

Azerbaijan has signed a new AI, or artificial intelligence, deal with Israel despite the latter’s genocide in Gaza.
Azerbaijan and Israel have long had close ties in defense and intelligence, and on Tuesday, Feb. 3, the two countries signed a new agreement in Jerusalem to deepen their ongoing alliance through AI.
During the signing event, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said “AI is Azerbaijan-Israel,” adding Israel must ensure that it is among the leading countries in this field.
The event comes after Israel in January became the first country to sign a joint declaration on artificial intelligence with the US, according to the Times of Israel.
Since Oct. 7, 2023, Israel has employed AI systems extensively in its military operations during its genocide in Gaza, killing more than 71,824 Palestinians.
A report by Jerusalem-based investigative journalists published in +972 magazine found that AI targeting systems used by Israel, including systems like Lavender, Habsora and Where’s Daddy, played a key role in identifying tens of thousands of targets in Gaza.
Experts, including those from the UN, argue these systems contributed to thousands of civilian deaths, especially women and children, due to minimal oversight and use of unguided "dumb bombs."
Israel’s new partnership with Azerbaijan does not mention AI use in the military, but will instead focus on supercomputing infrastructure, the application of AI in critical civilian sectors, human capital and joint research.
