This Woman Has Become Bahrain’s First Woman Boat Captain, Inspiring Other Women To Pursue Sailing Too

Hawra Al Jufairi has made history as Bahrain's first woman boat captain, inspiring other women to pursue careers in sailing.

Initially, Al Jufairi worked in accounting, but she soon realised her love for the sea and decided to change her career path.

“I like being sea. I like being on the water, so I decided I want to be unique. I want to do something different. That’s when I decided that I am gonna take the boat classes,” she said.

Her family was hesitant at first, as sailing is a male-dominated industry in Bahrain.

"My mom, obviously, was scared that I would be in the sea. Even my father, the same thing. He was scared at the beginning, but he said, 'Go for it. I know that you love this job; just go for it'," she said.

To get her license, Al Jufairi trained for three months, and in April 2021, she officially became Bahrain’s first woman commercial boat captain.

Her journey has inspired other women to pursue careers in sailing, with many aspiring to become captains or seawomen.
