Beloved Palestinian journalist Bisan Owda has shared a moving video of her documenting the thousands of Palestinians returning home to North Gaza as the first phase of the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas took effect on Friday, Oct. 10.

About 400,000 Palestinians were forced to flee south after Israel launched a full takeover of Gaza City in August, claiming it was Hamas’ last stronghold.

“Hi everyone, this is Bisan from Gaza. This is the best time to tell you that I am still alive,” Owda said. “It's October 10, 2025, and I am documenting the return of my people again.”

Thousands of Palestinians had made the same journey and returned to North Gaza during the temporary ceasefire in January that Israel later unilaterally broke.

They had been forcibly displaced for 15 months, as North Gaza has experienced the worst of Israel’s genocide, having been besieged since Oct. 6, 2024, and separated from the rest of the Strip.

Homes, buildings and hospitals have been reduced to rubble and thousands were forced to flee their homes.

“This is the second return, and I have never seen or heard about a people that returned twice in one year, but the Palestinian people,” Owda said.

She added that despite knowing that the whole city has been damaged or destroyed, that it’s not the end nor the return to the land Israel stole from them in 1947, but they will “live it just as it must be, returning, our heads are up and ready for whatever is coming.”

Since Israel began its genocide on Oct. 7, 2023, about 1.9 million Palestinians have been displaced, and the UN estimates that Israel’s genocide has destroyed more than 90% of housing in Gaza, according to BBC.
