Burkina Faso has passed a law banning same-sex relationships.

Under the law, people who are in same-sex relationships could face 2 to 5 years in prison, as well as fines.

The justice minister added that foreigners who are found guilty will also be deported.

This comes just a year after Burkina Faso’s media regulator banned TV stations from airing content deemed to be “promoting LGBTQ” topics in 2024.

Before the military seized power in the country in 2022, same-sex relationships were not banned in Burkina Faso.

The new law, which went into effect immediately, was unanimously approved by 71 unelected members of the transitional parliament, installed after 2 military coups in 2022.

Several countries in Africa — including Mali, Uganda and Kenya — have passed harsh anti-LGBTQ laws in recent years.
