Individual cigarettes will soon start carrying warnings such as “cigarettes cause cancer” and “poison in every puff”.
Cigarette packages already have warning labels, but Canada will become the first country in the world to print them on individual cigarettes starting August 1st.
The move is part of the government’s effort to reduce tobacco use to less than 5% by 2035.
By April 2025, all shops will only sell the cigarettes with the new warning labels.
Tobacco use kills around 48,000 people in Canada each year, according to the government.
In December 2022, New Zealand became the first country in the world to ban smoking for future generations by making it illegal for anyone born after Jan. 1, 2009, to ever buy tobacco, including cigarettes.
