Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Has Declared He Is A "Proud Zionist" At An Antisemitism Event
“No one in Canada should ever be afraid to call themselves Zionists. I am a Zionist."

Outgoing Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau has proudly declared that he is a Zionist at an event about antisemitism.
Speaking at the National Forum on Combating Antisemitism on Thursday, March 6, Trudeau delivered a speech about the importance of tackling antisemitism.
Trudeau said he had spoken to Canadian Auschwitz survivors who said they were concerned that the younger generation was forgetting about the Holocaust and that the rise of antisemitism would become normalized.
He said that antisemitism, Holocaust denialism and violent extremism had been on the rise since Hamas' "brutal barbaric terrorist attack of Oct. 7."
"What we, what you are experiencing is not normal," he said. "Antisemites singing the praises of Hamas and Hezbollah while waving their flags in the streets of our cities is not normal. Jewish students being shouted down in their classrooms and campuses for simply expressing their identity, their opinions, their beliefs, is not normal."
Trudeau added that there was an "increasingly common deafening indifference" and rationalization of rising antisemitism", which he said was not normal.
"The term Zionist is increasingly being tossed around as a pejorative, even though it simply means believing in the right of Jewish people, like all people, to determine their own future, is not normal,” he said.
“No one in Canada should ever be afraid to call themselves Zionists. I am a Zionist," he added.
His speech has sparked mixed reactions, with the Israeli Embassy in Canada welcoming his remarks.
“We deeply value Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s statement that ‘no one in Canada should ever be afraid to call themselves a Zionist’ and his clear identification as a Zionist — especially in such dark hours for Jews in Canada and around the world,” the embassy wrote on X.

However, Trudeau was also met with backlash, with many on social media calling him out for supporting a racist ideology that inherently involves the displacement and dispossession of Palestinians in order to create a Jewish state.
Antisemitism, like all racism, is repugnant and must be fought as a legal and moral duty. But opposing it should not mean ignoring the rights of others.

Zionism is a political and Jewish nationalist movement that believes that Judaism is a nationality and not just a religion and that Jews deserve their own state, their "ancestor homeland", which is Israeli occupied Palestine.
