A Chinese state media news anchor on China Central Television (CCTV) accidentally referred to Taiwan and China as “two countries” during a live broadcast.

The slip drew widespread attention, as China has long claimed Taiwan as part of its territory, and has ramped up pressure on Taiwan in recent years.

The gaffe came shortly after Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te delivered a speech on May 20 marking one year since he took office.

In response, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office issued a strongly worded statement, referring to Lai as the “leader of the Taiwan region.”

That evening, CCTV news anchor Hu Die made the unexpected mistake while reporting on the news.

“Nothing can stop the trend of the ‘two countries’… the trend of the ‘motherland’ eventually achieving reunification,” she said, before attempting to correct herself.

Although the segment was later removed from the CCTV’s official website, the live broadcast had already circulated widely online, with the video quickly going viral.

Many people online jokingly commented, “We’ll miss her,” while a political commentator predicted, “Her career as a news anchor is basically over.”

Taiwanese authorities have reiterated that the Taiwan, under its official name the Republic of China, is a sovereign and independent country, urging China to face that reality.

Tensions across the Taiwan Strait have been rising, with Lai publicly referring to China as a “foreign hostile force” for the first time on March 13.

However, in his latest anniversary address, Lai did not specifically address relations with China and instead underscored Taiwan’s firm commitment to peace, stating that it is willing to engage with China based on “parity and dignity.”
