China has jailed this journalist and women’s rights activist for 5 years for reporting on China’s #MeToo movement.
36-year-old Sophia Huang Xueqin is a leading figure in China's #MeToo movement, reporting on sexual abuse and starting several campaigns to support survivors.
She was first detained for 3 months in 2019 for reporting on Hong Kong pro-democracy protests and was accused of "picking quarrels and provoking trouble”.
In September 2021, Huang and her friend, Wang Jianbing, a worker’s rights activist, went missing just a day before she was leaving to study in the UK.
It was later revealed that Huang and Wang – who is also a #MeToo activist – had been arrested for holding meetings to discuss social issues like LGBTQ, women’s and workers’ rights.
They were also accused of publishing “provocative” articles against the Chinese government and running online courses that “encouraged people to feel discontented with the country”.
On Friday, June 14, a court in China sentenced Huang to the maximum sentence of 5 years and Wang to three and a half years for “inciting subversion of state power.”
Huang’s supporters say she will appeal.
