A video of a teenage girl being brutally bullied in Sichuan, China, has gone viral on Chinese social media, sparking public outrage.
The video showed several teens beating, insulting, and even stripping the girl, while others filmed the incident.
Local police said the attack had happened on July 22 in the city of Jiangyou and involved several girls aged just 14 to 15.
Police later said in a statement that the victim only suffered “minor injuries” and that they had sent two of the attackers to a “special school for corrective education.”
The light punishment angered the public.
The victim’s parents, reportedly both disabled, even knelt before officials begging for justice, fueling further outrage.
Days later, on Aug. 4, thousands of people in Jiangyou gathered outside the city government building to protest and demand harsher punishment for the attackers.
But police violently cracked down on the peaceful rally, with videos showing police beating and arresting citizens and even forcing them into pig transport trucks.
Large numbers of riot police clashed with protesters through the night, using batons, pepper spray, and signal jammers on demonstrators.
Protesters responded by singing the national anthem, throwing water bottles and traffic cones, and chanting “Stop bullying citizens” and “Give us back our democracy.”
The crackdown continued until the early hours of August 5.
The hashtag “Jiangyou Bullying” briefly trended on Chinese social media Weibo before it was taken down.
People then tried to flood the police's social media accounts to vent their anger, but most of the posts about the protests have since been deleted.
Police then issued another statement saying they had punished several people for “spreading rumors.”
