This Chinese Influencer Died After He Drank Too Much On A Livestream, Sparking A Debate On Chasing Fame
The man, known as Brother Three Thousand, shared a livestream where he drank at least seven bottles of baijiu, a Chinese liquor that can contain between 35% and 60% alcohol.
A Chinese live streamer was reportedly found dead after doing a drinking challenge on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok.
The man, who had the surname of Wang, was known as Brother Three Thousand (三千哥) on Douyin.
On Tuesday May 16, the 34-year-old recorded a livestream where he drank at least seven bottles of baijiu, a Chinese liquor that can contain between 35% and 60% alcohol.
The livestream was part of a challenge where Douyin influencers competed one-on-one to see who could get the most gifts from their fans in the shortest amount of time.
Wang lost three rounds and had to drink bottles of alcohol as punishment.
Viewers said Wang drank at least seven bottles of baijiu that night, according to the BBC.
The livestream ended around 1 am, and Wang’s body was discovered by his family later in the afternoon, according to China News Weekly.
His family held a funeral on Saturday.
Despite Douyin prohibiting users from drinking during livestreams, Wang had avoided the app’s sanctions by creating multiple accounts.
His death sparked a debate about influencers going to extremes in order to go viral in China.
People are now calling for stricter regulations in the live streaming industry in the aftermath of Wang’s death.
