Namibia’s Youngest Woman Minister Says There Should Be More Young Women In Politics
28-year-old Emma Theofelus says that everything we do is related to politics so young women and young people must get involved in politics to help make decisions about our future.
“If not you, who? And if not now, when?”
Speaking to Almost at UNESCO’s 2024 World Press Freedom Day event in Santiago, Chile, 28-year-old Emma Theofelus, Namibia’s youngest woman minister, says that everything we do is related to politics so young women and young people must get involved in politics to help make decisions about our future.
Theofelus, an activist, was 23 when she was appointed as Namibia’s Minister of Information, Communication and Technology in 2020, making her not only the youngest woman government minister in Namibia but across Africa.
Her activism focuses on fighting teen pregnancy and protecting young people’s sexual and reproductive health.
After her appointment, she led the country’s communications campaign on COVID-19 prevention and initiated a law to remove tax on period products, which was passed in 2022.
