France’s President Called On The World To Stop Arming Israel, Leading Netanyahu To Call Him "A Disgrace”
French President Emmanuel Macron said in a news conference that delivering the weapons of war is “inconsistent” with calling for a ceasefire, adding that a ceasefire in Gaza is the immediate priority.
French President Emmanuel Macron has called on the world to stop supplying weapons to Israel that are being used in its genocide in Gaza and its attacks on Lebanon.
During a news conference with the International Organization of the Francophonie on Saturday, Oct. 5, Macron said that delivering the weapons of war is “inconsistent” with calling for a ceasefire, adding that a ceasefire in Gaza is the immediate priority.
He expressed his support for Israel and its security and empathy for the hostages’ families.
However, he reiterated that to achieve a ceasefire, France must stop delivering arms to Israel.
“When we call for ceasefires – this is the case for Gaza, this was also the case for Lebanon last week – well, we try not to call for a ceasefire while continuing to deliver weapons of war. And I think it’s just consistency,” Macron said.
Macron also expressed his solidarity with Lebanon, condemning Israel’s attacks, and in particular its ground invasion of southern Lebanon, saying that France will provide support to “the Lebanese armed forces to secure southern Lebanon in particular.”
“We are unanimously in favor of an immediate and lasting ceasefire and have expressed our commitment to the de-escalation of tensions in the region. We want peace and security for all,” he said.
In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement on the same day condemning Macron and other Western leaders who want to put an arms embargo on Israel.
France’s weapons exports to Israel were “mainly of spare parts” used for re-export by Israel, according to French Minister of the Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornu.
However, the independent investigative organization Disclose alleged that the French government had authorized the export to Israel of electronic equipment used to monitor developments on the ground in Gaza, according to Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
