Gaza Has Been Flooded By Heavy Winter Rains, Worsening Conditions For Palestinians Mostly Living In Tents
90% of housing in Gaza has already been damaged or destroyed by Israel’s genocide, and about 1.5 million Palestinians live in makeshift shelters or tents.
Harsh winter and heavy rain have hit displaced Palestinians in Gaza, flooding their tents and worsening their already dire conditions as Israel continues to block winter supplies.
90% of housing in Gaza has already been damaged or destroyed by Israel’s genocide and about 1.5 million Palestinians live in makeshift shelters or tents.
Heavy winter rain has hit Gaza, resulting in widespread flooding of tent camps and shelters of displaced Palestinians.
Thousands of tents sheltering displaced people have been inundated, with water levels reportedly rising over 50 centimeters inside some shelter centers, soaking mattresses, blankets, and clothing.
Many of the shelter areas turned into pools of muddy water, with areas that have been completely submerged by water and other areas that were flooded by the heavy rainfall mixed with sewage water as well, making it very dangerous for people, Al Jazeera reported.
Families are scooping muddy water from their tents using buckets and holding down their tents using other rudimentary tools such as rocks and blocks, in the hopes of protecting the few belongings they have left, according to Al Jazeera.
Palestinians reported that just half an hour of rain can destroy their makeshift tents, and with most homes destroyed by Israel’s genocide, there are no alternatives for safe shelter.
Gaza media office estimates that 74% of displacement tents, 100,000 tents out of 135,000, need immediate and urgent replacement due to their complete deterioration.
Meanwhile, Israel is allowing only minimal aid to enter Gaza, with critically insufficient winter supplies.
As of Nov. 5, Israel rejected 21 out of 23 aid requests from humanitarian agencies, saying the organizations were “not authorized” to deliver aid, according to NRC.
More than 4,000 pallets of urgently needed shelter supplies such as tents, bedding, tarpaulins and blankets have been blocked or delayed by Israeli authorities since the ceasefire began on Oct. 10.
