Here's What Happened During Israel's Genocide In Gaza In January 2025

Here's what happened during Israel's genocide in Gaza in January 2025.

1. The Palestinian Authority launched its own security operation in the West Bank, killing 13 people

The Palestinian Authority (PA), which governs parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank, launched on Dec. 5 a “security campaign” to crack down on what it called “outlaws” in the Jenin area, particularly in the Jenin refugee camp.

The PA claims that armed resistance groups in Jenin have contributed to chaos and instability, which it aims to eradicate.

It deployed security forces into the camp, marking one of its first large-scale incursions in several years.

The crackdown has resulted in some of the worst internal fighting among Palestinians in years, with reports of gunfire and at least 11 Palestinians being killed, including two children, according to the UN.

2. Israel and Hamas finally agreed to a ceasefire deal for Gaza

Qatar’s prime minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani confirmed on Wednesday, Jan. 15, that both sides had agreed to the first phase of a ceasefire deal beginning on Sunday, Jan. 19, that would temporarily pause fighting, see the release of hostages from both sides and lead to “a prolonged truce that achieves a permanent ceasefire between the two sides."

The deal is expected to consist of three phases, with the second and third phases to be negotiated during the six week pause.

However, disagreements still remain over who will govern Gaza after the war.

3. Netanyahu said the ceasefire is temporary and Israel has the right to resume fighting with US backing

Netanyahu said that Trump called him the moment he was elected and got involved in the hostage negotiations and called him to welcome the agreement the evening it was agreed to on Wednesday Jan. 15.

"[Trump] emphasized, rightly, that the first phase of the agreement is a temporary ceasefire," Netanyahu said. "That's what he said — 'temporary ceasefire.'"

He added that both Trump and Biden had given "full backing" to Israel's right to return to fighting if Israel determines that the negotations on the second phase are futile.

He concluded by saying that the the campaign is not over yet and that a long and challenging journey still lay ahead until Israel is able to achieve its war goals.

4. Hamas and Israel began releasing Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners as part of the ceasefire deal

Hamas released three Israeli women hostages on Sunday, Jan. 19, as part of the first phase of the ceasefire deal.

Israel also released 90 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons on Jan. 19, as part of phase one of its ceasefire deal with Hamas.

The freed Palestinians included 69 women and 21 teenage boys — some as young as 12 — detained from the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Jerusalem, Al Jazeera reported.

5. After agreeing to a ceasefire in Gaza, Israel killed 12 Palestinians in a huge military operation in the West Bank

After Israel agreed on a ceasefire deal with Hamas, it launched a “large-scale and significant military operation”  in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, killing at least 12 people as of Thursday, Jan. 23.

Israel has deployed extensive ground troops, armored vehicles and air support as part of the operation.

The Palestinian Health Ministry reported that the violence included live ammunition and airstrikes targeting the Jenin refugee camp and that at least 35 people were injured.

6. Thousands of Palestinians are finally returning home to North Gaza after being forcibly displaced for 15 months

On Monday, Jan. 27, Israel finally allowed the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to return to the north after Hamas agreed to release Yehud along with two other hostages, according to Reuters.

Celebrations erupted in north Gaza following the news, with people who have been waiting since Saturday near the Netzarim corridor, finally reuniting with their loved ones who have been trapped north Gaza for months.

7. Qatar’s prime minister revealed the Gaza ceasefire deal is the same as the one presented 13 months ago

Qatar's Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, has revealed that the ceasefire deal Israel and Hamas agreed to on Wednesday, Jan. 15, has been on the table for 13 months.

“This is the framework that we have signed two days ago is the same framework that we agreed on on December 2023,” Abdulrahman Al Thani said in an interview with Sky News.

He added that the ceasefire deal is “the last chance for Gaza” and that “failure is not an option”.

8. Doctors and nurses around the world are demanding Israel free the director of Kamal Adwan hospital in Gaza

On Dec. 27, Israeli forces stormed Kamal Adwan and arrested Abu Safiya, who had refused to leave his patients.

Doctors from countries like Egypt, the UK, Brazil, India, and Canada have joined the campaign to free Abu Safiya.

Many people shared images of themselves holding signs with the hashtag “#FreeDrHussamAbuSafiyeh” on X, raising attention to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.

9. The Vatican revealed that Pope Francis has been calling a church in Gaza every night for 15 months

The Vatican has revealed that Pope Francis has been making calls to a church in Gaza every evening for 15 months since Oct. 9, 2023, two days after Israel began its genocide in Gaza.

During these calls, Pope Francis speaks personally with the members at the Holy Family Parish in Gaza, asking about their daily lives and offering his blessings.

The Vatican described these calls as a way to bring hope and comfort to people in Gaza during the war.
