This Palestinian Woman Doctor Ran Into Gunfire To Save An Injured Man And People Say She’s A Real Life Superhero
“If I feel that someone needs help, I will not think about myself,” Dr. Amira Al-Asouli, a retired obstetrician and gynecologist, said.
A Palestinian woman doctor named Dr. Amira Al-Asouli, who risked her life to save a wounded man, is being hailed as a “real life superhero”.
Al-Asouli gained worldwide attention after a viral video circulated showing her running into Israeli sniper gunfire to reach a wounded man.
In the video, Al-Asouli, a retired obstetrician and gynecologist, can be seen taking off her coat and ducking down to run towards the man who had been shot in a tent in front of Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis in south Gaza.
She was then followed by Dr. Mohamed Abo Lahya and a group of men who managed to carry the injured man on a stretcher back into the hospital.
Al-Asouli, who is retired, had returned to Gaza as a volunteer doctor after Israel declared war on Hamas on Oct. 7 to help attend to the wounded in Nasser Hospital, where she used to work.
Speaking with journalist Mohamed Akram Al-Helou after successfully rescuing the man, Al-Asouli said that when she saw the wounded man, she wasn’t thinking of herself but just how she could help him.
“The fear has been removed from my heart. If I feel that someone needs help, I will not think about myself,” she said.
She added that the mission of doctors has been clear since they graduated from medical school as they took an oath to assist anyone in need.
People online are praising Al-Asouli for her actions, calling her “The Iron Woman of Palestine”, “the Heroine of Khan Younis” and “a real life superhero”.
Israeli forces have forced thousands of displaced Palestinians to evacuate Nasser Hospital, which it has placed under siege for weeks.
