Italy's Far-Right Prime Minister Has Rolled Her Eyes After Trump Refused To Stop Increasing Tariffs On The EU
Meloni was caught on camera rolling her eyes as Trump delivered a lengthy monologue about tariffs and trade with the EU and other countries.

Far-right Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni rolled her eyes during a meeting with US president Donald Trump when he spoke about his move to increase tariffs.
On April 17, Meloni met Trump at the White House to represent the European Union and seek a fair tariff agreement to avoid a trade war.
Trump initially imposed a 20% tariff on all goods imported from the EU on April 2, with the tariffs set to take effect starting April 9 as part of his “reciprocal tariff” policy to address what he called "unfair" trade barriers imposed by the EU, according to Euractiv.
However, he later reduced it to 10% for 90 days to allow negotiations with EU countries.
At the end of the meeting, a reporter asked Trump if Meloni had convinced him to change his mind about imposing tariffs, but Trump said he wouldn’t stop tariff as it is making the US rich.
“No, no, tariffs are making us rich. We were losing a lot of money under biden,” he said.
Meloni was then caught on camera rolling her eyes as Trump delivered a lengthy monologue about tariffs and trade with the EU and other countries.
“We're making a lot of money. We're taking in a lot of money. Don't forget, we're taking in 25% on cars, 25% on steel, 25% on aluminum, 10% baseline. We put penalties on China for sending us fentanyl. We put penalties on Mexico and Canada, 25% for allowing fentanyl and allowing the borders to be weak. Now we're taking in billions and billions of dollars while I sit here and talk to you,” Trump said.
No immediate breakthroughs on tariffs were achieved from the two’s talks, though Meloni invited Trump to visit Rome, potentially to facilitate dialogue with other European leaders.
The EU is continuing yo advocate for a “zero-for-zero” tariff arrangement, while the US is still maintaining its 10% baseline demand.
At the meeting, Meloni encouraged Trump’s war against undocumented migration, spoke out against social justice and diversity programs, saying that her government also has no room for “woke ideology,” according to The New York Times.
"The goal for me is to make the West great again, and I think we can do it together," she said.
