Syrian Rebels Burned The Grave Of Bashar Al-Assad’s Father To Protest Years Of Oppression

Syrian rebels burned the grave of Hafez al-Assad, president Bashar al-Assad’s father and former president of Syria, grave in protest to years of oppression.

On Wednesday, Dec. 11, rebels stormed al-Assad’s mausoleum in the family’s hometown of Qardaha in the northwestern coastal region of Latakia and set it on fire celebrating the end of over 50 years of the al-Assad family rule.

Hafez al-Assad ruled Syria from 1971 until his death in 2000, with his regime being notorious for authoritarianism, repression and brutally suppressing the opposition.

The al-Assad regime employed extensive torture methods in detention facilities, including beatings, electric shocks, sexual violence and other forms of inhumane treatment.

Reports said that between 1980 and 2000, thousands of political prisoners were systematically killed and more than 17,000 Syrians were subjected to forced disappearances under Hafez al-Assad’s rule, according to Amnesty International.

After his death, his son Bashar al-Assad continued his legacy of oppression and human rights violations, driving Syria to 13 years of civil war to suppress opposition.

In a 12-day lightning offensive, rebels took control of major cities in the country and toppled al-Assad’s regime on Dec. 8.
