Hamas Has Issued A Video Statement Saying It Is Committed To The Ceasefire And Will Abide By It

Hamas' armed wing al-Qassam Brigades' spokesperson Abu Obeida delivered a speech on Saturday, Jan. 19, following the beginning of the ceasefire in Gaza.

Abu Obeida said that Hamas is committed to all the conditions of the agreement as long as Israel is also committed.

He called on international mediators to ensure Israel complies with the ceasefire, saying that any failure to uphold the agreement could jeopardize the safety of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.

In the video, Abo Obeida said that the agreement could have been achieved more than a year ago “had it aligned with the ambitions of Netanyahu and his fascist government, which insisted on continuing the genocide, aiming to displace our people and cause as much destruction as possible.”

He also condemned Israel’s actions not only in Gaza but also in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and its attacks on countries neighboring Palestine, describing Israel as “the source of calamity” in the region.

Abu Obeida then assured Palestinians in Gaza that the ceasefire could be a time for rebuilding and unity after extensive destruction caused by the Israeli military’s operations.

Hamas released three women Israeli hostages on Sunday, Jan. 19  and it is expected to release another 30 hostages during the period of six weeks as part of the first phase of the ceasefire deal.

Israel released 90 Palestinian prisoners the same day but arrested 60 others on Monday, Jan. 20 in a raid on the town of Azzun in Qalqilya in the occupied West Bank.

It has also reportedly violated the ceasefire in Gaza, with snipers shooting and killing three Palestinians in Rafah, southern Gaza on Monday, Jan. 20.
