After Israel Accused Hezbollah Of Hiding Gold Under A Beirut Hospital, The BBC Went In And Found Nothing

The BBC went into Al Sahel Hospital in Beirut, Lebanon, after Israel claimed Hezbollah was hiding millions of dollars in cash and gold in a bunker under the hospital, but did not find anything.

Israeli Forces spokesman Daniel Hagari said in a statement on Monday, Oct. 21, that Hezbollah had built a bunker for extended stays and operational command and had intentionally placed it under a hospital to shield it from attacks but did not provide evidence.

Israeli forces later shared an animated graphic depicting the alleged bunker under the hospital.

.The hospital's director, Fadi Alameh, denied the existence of a bunker, asserting that the facility is solely a medical center with underground operating rooms and has no ties to Hezbollah and invited the Lebanese army to investigate, according to Reuters.

The BBC then went inside the hospital on Oct. 22 to investigate but found Israel’s claims baseless after searching through the hospital as there were no signs of hidden cash or gold inside.

The BBC anchor said that hospital staff opened drawers and boxes of medical equipment in front of them and allowed them to roam the building on their own.

Although there was no evidence of Israel’s claims, the hospital had to evacuate the patients and staff, fearing that Israeli forces might attack it after the accusations.

Since Israel announced on Sept. 19 that its war is entering a “new phase”  focused on returning Israeli who fled their homes in the north and eliminating Hezbollah, it has attacked medical facilities in Lebanon at least 23 times.

As a result, at least two hospitals were forced to close after Israel bombed them under the claims it was attacking targets linked to Hezbollah, according to the World Health Organization.
