Why We Must Keep Paying Attention To Hong Kong With Joey Siu
Talking about how people can support Hong kong, Siu said that it is not necessary to join a "Hong Kong specific protest or demonstration" but it is important to take baby steps towards "human rights and democracy."

In December 2024, Hong Kong authorities canceled the passports of seven overseas Hong Kong activists under the National Security Law.

Almost spoke to Joey Siu, one of the seven activists based in Washington DC, who can no longer return home, about how she feels about the latest crackdown and how people can continue to help support Hong Kongers fighting for their democracy.

Siu said that the seven activists have been put on international arrest warrant by the Hong Kong government and have also issued a bounty of 1 million US Dollars on many of them.

She added that when the arrest warrant and bounty came for her, she went through an emotional turmoil of knowing that she might never be able to return home.

Siu also talked about the importance of freedom and democracy, saying that one should never take these values for granted and should also remember how fragile these values are.

"The story of Hong Kong is not just one for people living in half democratic countries or people living in dictatorial countries, but I think it is more of the story that needs to be remembered by people who are currently living in democracies and enjoying that freedom and democracy.," she said.
Siu then also said how the situation in Hong Kong is intertwined with the situation in Gaza and Syria.

"You cannot only talk about China without touching on the human rights violation in Tibet, East Turkistan, forced labor, human rights and how the US government or other democracies is responding, is conducting themselves in those regions."
Talking about how people can support Hong kong, Siu said that it is not necessary to join a "Hong Kong specific protest or demonstration" but it is important to take baby steps towards "human rights and democracy."

"And then really just doing a tiny thing like retweeting or sharing a view on Instagram or liking a YouTube video to make sure that human rights and democracy is always central in our conversations," she added.
