Hamas has not confirmed Abu Obeida’s death but said that Mohammad Sinwar, a senior Hamas leader and the younger brother of late Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, had been assassinated.

Israel says it has killed Abu Obeida, the spokesperson for Hamas' armed wing, the Al Qassam brigades, in an airstrike on Saturday, Aug. 30, in its “initial stages” of fully taking over Gaza City.

The attack targeted an apartment building in the Rimal neighborhood where Abu Obeida was reportedly sheltering, killing at least 11 people.

Videos of the attack showed dozens of children injured and the destruction of the area.

Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz called the operation a "flawless execution," and the Israeli military confirmed the killing, praising the intelligence efforts behind it.

However, Hamas has not confirmed Abu Obeida’s death and warned against rumors, describing them as psychological warfare by Israel.

Instead, it confirmed the assassination of Mohammad Sinwar, a senior commander of the Al-Qassam Brigades and the younger brother of the late Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, whom Israel killed in October 2024.

Israel had said it killed Mohammed Sinwar in an attack on a hospital in southern Gaza on May 13 when it dropped six bombs on the European Hospital in Khan Younis, killing 28 people and injuring many others, including a BBC journalist, claiming it was targeting Sinwar.

Israel is now intensely bombing Gaza City after it announced on Friday, Aug. 29,that it began “preliminary operations and the initial stages” of its attack on Gaza City.

It has also said it will suspend humanitarian pauses in Gaza City and warned civilians to evacuate.

Israel has called up more than 60,000 Israeli army reservists who are set to report for duty on Sept. 2 to join the operation, according to The New York Post.

Military sources and Israeli media said the full-scale takeover is expected to begin in mid-September.

Israel’s genocide in Gaza has now killed more than 63,633 people, more than 83% of whom are civilians, and Gaza City is officially in a man-made famine created by Israel.
