Israel Killed 90 Palestinians In A "Safe Zone" In Gaza, Saying It Was Targeting A Senior Hamas Leader
The Al-Mawasi displacement camp was sheltering about 80,000 Palestinians in makeshift tents and had been designated a “safe zone” by Israel, which had urged civilians to evacuate there.
Israel has bombed Al Mawasi camp in Gaza, killing more than 90 people on July 13, saying it was targeting two senior Hamas leaders.
The Al-Mawasi displacement camp was sheltering about 80,000 Palestinians in makeshift tents and had been designated a “safe zone” by Israel, which had urged civilians to evacuate there.
But Israel then then launched five bombs and five missiles on the camp on Saturday, July 13, killing more than 90 people and injuring 300 others while also targeting aid workers at the scene.
Videos shared on social media showed Palestinians fleeing, with bodies scattered on the ground and rescue workers desperately digging through the rubble.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it is unclear if the Hamas leaders it was targeting had been killed.
It had said that Rafa’a Salameh, commander of Hamas’s Khan Younis Brigade, and Mohammed Deif, head of Hamas’s military wing, were in the area.
Hamas officials said the two leaders were alive and Israel was using them to justify its “horrific massacre”.
As a result, Hamas said it had halted ceasefire negotiations due “to Israel’s lack of seriousness and the ongoing massacres against unarmed civilians”.
This is one of Israel’s deadliest attacks in Gaza in weeks, bringing the death toll in Gaza since Oct. 7 to 38,600 Palestinians, mostly women and children.
