Israel Is Now Also Bombing Lebanon After Hezbollah Retaliated Over The Assassination Of Iran’s Supreme Leader
Lebanon’s prime minister condemned Hezbollah’s attack as “irresponsible”, saying it jeopardizes Lebanon’s security and safety and “provides Israel with pretexts to continue its aggression”.
The Israeli military bombed Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, on Monday, Mar. 2, after Hezbollah launched rockets and drones toward northern Israel in retaliation for Israel and the US assassination Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
On Saturday, Feb. 28, US president Donald Trump announced Israel and the US were launching a “major combat operation” in Iran to “obliterate” Iran’s nuclear ambitions and for a regime change.
US missiles, drones and Israeli fighter jets targeted more than 500 sites across Iran, killing at least 555 people and assassinating Khamenei, who had been Iran’s supreme leader since 1989.
In retaliation, Hezbollah, the Lebanese political party and militant group that is funded by Iran, launched a rocket and drone attack against a military base in Haifa, northern Israel.
“The resistance leadership has always affirmed that the continuation of Israeli aggression and the assassination of our leaders, youth and people gives us the right to defend ourselves and respond at the appropriate time and place,” the group said in a statement.
“The Israeli enemy cannot continue its 15-month-long aggression without a warning response to halt this aggression and withdraw from the occupied Lebanese territories,” it added.
Israel then responded by bombing Hezbollah strongholds in Southern Lebanon, as well as Beirut, declaring Hezbollah’s leader, Naim Qassem, a"target for elimination".
Explosions were heard throughout the city as fighter jets flew overhead, and buildings were destroyed in residential neighborhoods.
People have fled their homes and are taking shelter in schools and public buildings.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported that Israel’s bombing killed at least 31 people and injured 149 others, making it one of Israel’s deadliest attacks on Lebanon since it agreed to a “ceasefire” with Hezbollah in November 2024.
The Israeli military claimed it killed Hussein Makled, the head of Hezbollah’s intelligence headquarters during its overnight strikes in Beirut.
Lebanon’s prime minister, Nawaf Salam, condemned Hezbollah’s attack as “irresponsible”, saying it jeopardizes Lebanon’s security and safety and “provides Israel with pretexts to continue its aggression”.
