As Soon As Syria Was Freed, Israel Began Bombing Military Sites Across Syria, Destroying The Navy
Since al-Assad’s regime fell, Israel has carried out more than 480 airstrikes targeting key military sites across major cities in Syria in just the 48 hours, the Israeli military said.
Just days after rebels overthrew president Bashar al-Assad, Israel launched a series of airstrikes, targeting several military sites across the country, destroying its navy.
On Tuesday, Dec. 10, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a video confirming he had ordered the strikes, saying the aim was to bomb “military capabilities left by the Syrian army, so that it doesn’t fall in the hands of jihadists”.
Since al-Assad’s regime fell, Israel has carried out more than 480 airstrikes targeting key military sites across major cities in Syria in just the 48 hours, the Israeli military said.
Israeli forces also destroyed 15 naval vessels at facilities and seaports in Al-Beida and Latakia on Dec. 10 and 11, the military said.
Israel also targeted a research center in Barzeh, north of Damascus, which was linked to developing chemical weapons under al-Assad’s regime, according to the Times Of Israel.
At least two civilians were reported killed during the Israeli strikes, according to Al Jazeera.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz called the attacks a “great success”, adding that the strikes were aimed at destroying “strategic capabilities that threaten the State of Israel.”
The Israeli military said it estimates that up to 80% of Syria’s military capabilities have been destroyed in what it called one of its largest operations, Al Jazeera reported.
Meanwhile, Israeli ground troops have begun invading Syria, moving into areas beyond the demilitarized buffer zone between the two countries near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
On Monday, Dec. 9, Netanyahu declared the Syrian territory along the occupied-Golan Heights – designated as a demilitarized zone since 1974 – would remain part of Israel “for eternity.”
Defense Minister Katz also announced that Israel was creating a “security zone free of heavy strategic weapons and terrorist infrastructures” in southern Syria, beyond the buffer zone.
Netanyahu has warned that Israel would “respond forcefully” and “exact a heavy price” if Iran rebuilds its presence in Syria or if any weapons are transferred to Hezbollah.
