Israel has killed three journalists in Lebanon, bombing their vehicle, which was clearly marked as press, with four missile strikes.

The three journalists, Ali Shoeib, Fatima Ftouni and Mohammed Ftouni were killed on Saturday, March 28, after Israel hit their vehicle near the town of Jezzine, where they had been covering the ongoing Israeli attacks on Lebanon.

Shoeib worked as a reporter for Al Manar TV, Fatima Ftouni was a journalist for Al Mayadeen and her brother Mohammed Ftouni worked as a cameraman there.

Al Mayadeen said the vehicle was struck by four precision missiles.

Other journalists were injured in the attack, and one paramedic was killed as ambulances were also reportedly targeted, according to Al Jazeera.

Images shared online showed the journalists’ car completely destroyed by the strike, with cameras and press equipment scattered across the road.

Israel claimed the strike was targeting Shoeib, alleging he was affiliated with Hezbollah, but did not provide evidence to support the claim.

Both Al Manar and Al Mayadeen said the three were civilian journalists doing their job.

Hundreds of people gathered in southern Lebanon on Sunday, March 29, for the funerals of three slain journalists.

Mourners carried their coffins through the streets through crowds and laid them to rest in their respective hometowns.

Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun and the government have condemned the killings as a “flagrant crime” and a violation of international law, saying they will take the case to the UN Security Council.

Journalists are protected as civilians under international humanitarian law, and press freedom groups have warned of a growing pattern of reporters being killed by Israel while covering its attacks on countries like Palestine and Lebanon.

Israel has killed more than 270 journalists in Gaza.

It has now killed more journalists than any other country since the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) began keeping records.
