Israel has killed eight people in a double-tap strike on a beach in Beirut, Lebanon, where Lebanese people displaced by its attacks were sheltering in tents.

Israel and Hezbollah, a Lebanese political party and militant group funded by Iran, had agreed to a US-brokered “ceasefire” in November 2024 after over a year of exchanging fire across the Lebanese-Israeli border.

However, Israel kept violating the ceasefire, with more than 10,000 violations recorded, including near-daily airstrikes across Lebanon.

After the US and Israel launched a joint unprovoked war on Iran on Feb. 28 and assassinated Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Hezbollah retaliated on March 2 by firing rockets at Israeli military sites for the first time since the 2024 truce.

Hezbollah said the attack was both retaliation for Khamenei's killing and a response to Israel's ongoing violations of the ceasefire.

Israel then responded by bombing Hezbollah strongholds in Southern Lebanon, as well as Lebanon’s capital Beirut, declaring Hezbollah’s leader, Naim Qassem, a "target for elimination".

Israel also pushed ground troops further into southern Lebanon, occupying territory it was supposed to have handed back in the “ceasefire” and issued “leave or die” evacuation orders to people in southern Lebanon and eastern Beirut.

Hundreds of thousands of people were forced to flee their homes and many ended up in makeshift shelters, including tents pitched along Beirut's seafront at Ramlet al-Baida, an area not traditionally targeted by Israel and outside the zones where Israel has issued evacuation orders.

But on Wednesday, March 11, Israel bombed the Ramlet al-Baida seafront, then struck it again shortly after, a tactic known as "double-tap" that often targets first responders or those rushing to assist after the first attack, killing eight people and injuring 31 others.

Israel’s attacks on Lebanon since Feb. 28 have killed more than 634 people, according to Lebanese health officials.

Meanwhile, Israel is also violating the “ceasefire” in Gaza, killing over 648 Palestinians since the ceasefire began on Oct. 10 and attacking Iran with the US, killing over 1,255 people.
