Israel Is Now Attacking Lebanon Too, Violating Its Ceasefire Deal With Hezbollah

Israel has launched a series of airstrikes on Lebanon in the most significant escalation since the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah began on Nov. 27, 2024.

It came more than two months after Israel launched a “new phase” of war against Hezbollah on Sep. 19, 2024, and started relentlessly attacking Lebanon following a year of cross-border clashes between Israel and Hezbollah since Oct. 7, 2023.

Israel attacked on Saturday, March 22, multiple areas in southern Lebanon including Touline, Bint Jbeil and the coastal city of Tyre, killing seven people, including two children and injuring 40 others, according to Lebanon's health ministry.

Israel said it was attacking Hezbollah sites, claiming that a rocket was fired from Lebanon at Israel in the morning and holding the Lebanese government responsible.

The rocket attack did not result in any casualties, and no group claimed responsibility.

Hezbollah also denied responsibility for the attack and accused Israel of creating a pretext to renew its war in Lebanon, Al Jazeera reported.

Israel has been accused of many violations of the ceasefire with Hezbollah, including launching several attacks on Lebanon and refusing to withdraw its troops from the south of the country by Feb. 18 as agreed upon in the ceasefire deal.

Lebanese prime minister Nawaf Salam warned of the risk of a war and called for measures to prevent further escalation, Reuters reported.

The United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon said it was alarmed by the “volatile”  situation, adding that any further escalation could have “serious consequences for the region.”
