This Italian High Jumper’s Wedding Ring Fell Into The Seine During The Olympic Opening Ceremony
Gianmarco Tamberi apologized to his wife on Instagram then urged her to throw her ring into the Seine as well so they could be together forever and give them an excuse to renew their vows.
Italian high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi has revealed that his wedding ring fell into the Seine River while he was waving Team Italy’s flag on its boat during the Paris Olympics' opening ceremony on Friday, July 26.
Tamberi took to Instagram to apologize to his wife, Chiara, the day after.
The 32-year-old athlete was sharing flag-bearing duties on the Paris waterway with Italian fencer Arianna Errigo when he felt the ring slip, he wrote.
“Too much water, too many kilos lost in the last few months or maybe the irrepressible enthusiasm of what we were doing,” Tamberi wrote.
”I saw it fly… I followed her with a glance until I saw her bouncing inside the boat.
A Glimmer of Hope ... But unfortunately the bounce was in the wrong direction and floating more than a thousand times in the air I saw her dive into the water like that was the only place she wanted to be,” he wrote.”
“But if it was meant to happen… I couldn’t imagine a better place. It will stay forever in the riverbed of the city of love,” Tamberi added.
He then urged his wife to throw her ring into the Seine as well so they could be together forever and give them an excuse to renew their vows.
In the comments section, Chiara responded, “Only you can turn something like this into something romantic.”
Tamberi famously won gold with fellow high jumper Qatar’s Mutaz Barsham during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Tamberi and Barsham had opted to share first place instead of having a jump-off after being deadlocked at a jump height 2.37m (7.77 feet).
The Italian high jumper will be seeking gold again on Wednesday, Aug. 2, when the Men’s High Jump qualification begins.
