The International Criminal Court (ICC) has received a complaint accusing far-right Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni of being complicit in Israel’s genocide in Gaza for supplying arms to Israel.

A pro-Palestine advocacy group filed the complaint, which was dated Oct. 1, and also targets Italy’s defense minister Guido Crosetto and foreign minister Antonio Tajani, for war crimes and crimes against humanity, according to Le Monde.

“By supporting the Israeli government, particularly through the supply of lethal weapons, the Italian government has become complicit in the ongoing genocide and the extremely serious war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against the Palestinian people,” the group wrote in the court filing.

The complaint was signed by about 50 people, including law professors, lawyers and public figures, according to AFP.

The filing comes a few weeks after tens of thousands of Italian workers and students went on a nationwide strike, halting trains, buses, traffic and schools to protest Israel’s genocide in Gaza and demand the government end its arms shipments to Israel.

On Tuesday, Oct. 7, Meloni told local news that she had been accused, alongside other members of the government, of supplying weapons to Israel.

She said she thinks that the head of Italian weapon and aerospace manufacturer Leonardo, Roberto Cingolani, was also denounced for complicity.

"I don't believe there is another case like this in the world or in history," Meloni said.

Meloni denied the accusations and said she was “amazed”, adding that "anyone who knows the situation is aware that Italy has not authorized new, let's say, arms supplies to Israel after Oct. 7," according to Reuters.

Italy accounts for about 1% of Israel’s arm imports, mainly light helicopters and naval guns, according to Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)

In August 2025, the government said it had not supplied any weapons to Israel after Oct. 7, but later clarified that arm deliveries from pre-existing contracts before Oct. 7 were still being fulfilled.
