A Clip From TV Show “Jack Ryan” Is Going Viral For Accurately Portraying The US’ Obsession With Venezuela
After the clip went viral, co-creator Carlton Cuse told Deadline that the team had aimed to make the story feel realistic rather than a “prophecy”.
A clip from the American TV series “Jack Ryan”, starring John Krasinski, has gone viral after people said it accurately captured why the US carried out its military operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
The scene from season two of the show that aired six years ago in 2019, features Krasinski’s character, CIA analyst Jack Ryan, explaining the geopolitical importance of Venezuela and arguing that the country was a bigger threat to the US than Russia, China or North Korea.
“The fact is that Venezuela is arguably the single greatest resource of oil and minerals on the planet,” Krasinski's character explained.
In the series, Venezuela is ruled by a fictional dictator, Nicolas Reyes — a parallel to Maduro — who has ruled Venezuela for six years, rising to power on “nationalist pride”, halving the national economy and raising the poverty rate by “almost 400%”.
After the clip went viral, co-creator Carlton Cuse told Deadline that the team had aimed to make the story feel realistic rather than a “prophecy”.
“What always surprises you as a storyteller is how often real-world events catch up to fiction,” Cuse said. “We approached Venezuela as a country where democratic ideals, economic reality and geopolitical interests have been in tension for a long time — and where choices are never simple.”
The season finale involved the US launching a military operation in Venezuela, with Ryan flying into Venezuela’s presidential palace and confronting the authoritarian leader after he loses an election to the opposition.
At the time of its release, some people said the ending was a bit “absurd” and “ridiculous,” but after the recent events in Venezuela, others have suggested the storyline now feels less far-fetched.
