UNICEF’s spokesperson James Elder has shared a short but hopeful video from inside Gaza hours after US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the first phase of his ceasefire deal for Gaza.

“Is this the moment?” Elder, who is currently in Gaza, asked in the video he posted on his Instagram in the early hours of Thursday, Oct. 9.

He said that it was the middle of the night so Palestinians were sleeping and hadn’t heard the news but added that it was also incredibly quiet from the skies as there were no airstrikes.

“Come on!” he said.

A few hours later, he shared another video when Palestinians were slowly waking up to the news that an agreement had been reached.

He said that there were huge signs of joy and relief in Gaza, but added that he could not believe that it had to get to this point.

“I never thought it’d get to the point where 20,000 girls and boys were killed. I never thought it’d get to the point where the world failed Palestinians so badly, and where 1,000 babies have reportedly been killed,” he said.

He said that the level of devastation has left Palestinians without any coping capacity as everything has been taken from them.

“People ask if the Palestinians have hope. Yes, they have hope. They have hope because it's the one thing they have agency over,” Elder said.
