Jeffrey Sachs economist us most violent country

A 2022 video of renowned US economist, Jeffrey Sachs, has gone viral for his honest critique of the US as “the most violent country in the world since 1950”.

Sachs made the comments during a panel discussion at the 2022 Athens Democracy Forum, titled “A Decade of Democracy: China and Russia”.

During the panel, Sachs argued that US cannot credibly act as global pillar of democracy, given its history of slavery and its genocide against Indigenous people.

He described the US as a “semi-democratic, white-dominated hierarchical, racist society that aims to preserve privilege by the elites”.

He also said that a nation can be “democratic at home and ruthlessly imperial abroad”, citing the UK as an example.

Sachs was then cut off by the moderator who had repeatedly stopped him from speaking.

The video has gone viral again online, with many noting that it accurately captures the essence of US politics.

Sachs’ has since continued to challenge the narrative as a global leader given its foreign policy, most recently on its complicity of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, saying that the US is using its power to enable Israel’s actions and war crimes.
