Actor and wrestler John Cena has apologized after he called Taiwan a country in a promotional video for the latest “Fast and Furious” film, which he stars in.
In an interview with Taiwanese TV station, TVBS, Cena, 44, said Taiwan would be the first “country” to be able to watch “Fast and Furious 9”, prompting immediate backlash in China, which considers Taiwan a part of the mainland.
In a video posted on Chinese social media site Weibo, Cena apologizes to China in Mandarin, which he has studied for years.
“I made a mistake,” he said in the video. “Now I have to say one thing which is very, very, very important: I love and respect China and Chinese people.”
“I am very sorry for my mistake. Sorry. Sorry. I’m really sorry. You have to understand that I love and respect China and Chinese people,” he added.
His apology has been met with a mixed response, with some Weibo users less forgiving than others while others criticized him on Twitter for bowing to Chinese pressure.
