In a stunning display of Olympic athleticism, Norwegian cross-country skier Johannes Høsflot Klæbo sprinted uphill in skis to win the gold medal at the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics.

During the men's sprint classic on Tuesday, Feb. 10, Klæbo skied uphill as if it were a run in the park, achieving a time of three minutes and 39.74 seconds.

Herecorded speeds of 18.4 km/h (11.41 mph), meaning he ran in a sub-six-minute mile pace on ice.

A sub-six-minute mile is a challenging, elite-level goal for runners that involves running one mile in less than 6 minutes and requires significant speed, strength and endurance.

This year’s sprint classic event consists of a 1,585-meter-long race where skiers must move their skis parallel in groomed tracks in the snow across a mix of different terrains, including flat, incline, and downhill.

Video clips of Klæbo’s explosive power and stamina have since become an internet sensation while highlighting one of the Games’ lesser-known sports.

“Klaebo is the single most impressive athlete I've ever seen in a Winter Olympic Games, ” one person wrote online.

Even Klaebo's competitors were mind blown by his technique, with American corss country skier Ben Ogden saying Klaebo appeared to be competing in an entirely different sport.

"When you have to face Johannes in every single race, you know that you have to bring the best version of yourself and bring your A-game and you have to keep dreaming," Ogden said.

Before this year’s games, Klæbo was already a seven-time Olympic medalist, with five gold medals.

With this win, and his win in the Skiathlon event on Sunday, Feb. 8, Klæbo is poised for breaking the record for most Winter Olympic gold medals won by a single person.

The 29-year-old skier has four more chances to make history as he sets to compete in the 10km interval, mass start, the team relay and team sprint events during this year's games.
