Liam Payne From One Direction Has Died At Age 31 After Falling From A Hotel Balcony In Argentina
Payne had been visiting Argentina with his former One Direction bandmate Niall Horan, who had performed in Buenos Aires on Oct. 2.
Liam Payne, a former member of the British boy band One Direction, was found dead after he fell from a hotel balcony in Argentina, police said. He was 31.
Police said that Payne died after he was severely injured after falling from the third floor of the CasaSur Hotel in the Palermo District in Buenos Aires on Wednesday Oct. 16.
Medics confirmed his death on the spot, police said in a statement.
Police had rushed to the hotel after receiving an emergency call about an “aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol” at around 5 pm local time, according to Reuters.
Police said in statement that the hotel manager had then heard a loud noise at the back of the hotel, and when they arrived, they found that a man had fallen over the balcony in his room.
Argentine authorities told local media that they are investigating the circumstances of Payne’s death and are conducting an autopsy.
Payne had been visiting Argentina with his former One Direction bandmate Niall Horan, who had performed in Buenos Aires on Oct. 2.
Payne had attended the concert and was seen dancing and singing along with fans, according to the Guardian.
Payne was one of five members of One Direction, which was formed in 2010, co-writing several of its songs including “Night Changes” and “Story of My Life.”
The band exploded in popularity and topped the charts with several hits including “What Makes You Beautiful” before disbanding in 2016.
Payne had previously spoken publicly about how he had struggled with his meteoric rise to fame, discussing its impact on his mental health and how he had used alcohol to cope with the pressure.
In July 2023, he posted a video to his YouTube channel saying he had been sober for six months after going to rehab.
Following news of his death, dozens of fans gathered outside the hotel and held an impromptu vigil, with many expressing their shock in interviews.

"I felt that it was necessary because he was a part of my childhood... All my friends and I were big fans of One Direction, it left its mark on us," Marina, a fan, told the BBC. "The news was very sad."
Payne had a seven-year-old son named Bear with his ex-girlfriend, British TV personality and Girls Aloud singer Cheryl.
He is also survived by his parents and two older sisters.
