London Zoo held its annual weigh-in last week on Aug. 26, weighing and measuring all of its 20,000 animals, including lions, penguins, tortoises, squirrel monkeys and camels.
“We have to know the vital statistics of every animal at the Zoo – from the tallest giraffe to the tiniest ant,” London Zoo’s animal manager Angela Ryan said.
“It helps to ensure that every animal we look after is healthy, eating well, and growing at the rate they should – weight is a particularly important indicator of health and wellbeing.”
By sharing this knowledge with other zoos, they hope to provide better care for the species they strive to protect.
