France’s President Spoke About Greenland In Greenlandic And Danish To Show His Support Against Trump
“Greenland is not for sale, nor is it to be taken. Greenlanders will decide their future,” Macron said in Greenlandic.
France’s president Emmanuel Macron has shown his support for Greenland against US president Donald Trump’s ongoing annexation threats by speaking in Greenlandic and Danish during a speech.
In the past weeks, Trump has escalated his campaign to acquire Greenland for “national security”, proposing plans to give Greenlandic people money to break with Denmark and threatening to impose new tariffs on European countries that opposed the move.
On Jan. 21, Trump walked back on his threats to impose new tariffs after talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, where he discussed a framework on a future deal for Greenland.
On Wednesday, Jan. 28, Macron met with Greenlandic prime minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen at the Élysée Palace.
The three leaders discussed “security challenges in the Arctic and the economic and social development of Greenland, which France and the European Union are ready to support," according to Reuters.
In a press conference after the meeting, Macron reiterated his commitment to support Denmark and Greenland in both Greenlandic and Danish.
“Greenland is not for sale, nor is it to be taken. Greenlanders will decide their future,” Macron said in Greenlandic.
Frederiksen said “the world order as we have known it is under pressure” and that a “stronger Europe” was needed to defend “democratic values”.
France will open a consulate in Greenland on Feb. 6.
