Spain has been blanketed in thick snow after being hit by Storm Filomena, the worst snowstorm the country has seen in 50 years.
Madrid, Spain’s central capital, is one of the worst affected regions. It was the heaviest snowfall in Madrid since 1971, with the city receiving up to 20 to 30 cm (seven to eight inches) of snow on Saturday, according to The State Meteorological Agency.
Transport has been disrupted, flights have been canceled, and the Spanish government will be sending convoys carrying food supplies and COVID-19 vaccine to areas cut off by the storm, according to CNN.
Madrid residents were so excited about the snow that a crowd put up a snowball fight on the street, and people have been captured sledging, snowboarding and skiing in the center of the city.
The cold weather, which has left four people dead, is set to continue beyond this week, with temperatures in Madrid predicted to hit -12C on Thursday, the BBC reported.
