Iran's President Has Personally Apologized To Neighboring Countries For Bombing Them, Saying It’ll Stop
"From now on, they should not attack neighboring countries or fire missiles at them, unless we are attacked by those countries."
Iran's president has apologized to its neighboring countries for bombing them as part of its retaliatory strikes against the US and Israel, saying it will stop targeting the countries unless attacks originate from them.
On Feb. 28, the US and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran, targeting its nuclear facilities, military infrastructure and leadership.
In the opening wave of strikes, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was assassinated, along with dozens of other senior officials.
Iran then retaliated, launching missiles and drones at Israel, as well as US military bases across the region.
Its targets included US bases and allies in Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
A week into the war, on Saturday, March 7, Iran’s president Masoud Pezeshkian made a public statement personally apologizing to neighboring countries Iran attacked.
"I should apologize to the neighboring countries that were attacked by Iran, on my own behalf," he said. "From now on, they should not attack neighboring countries or fire missiles at them, unless we are attacked by those countries. I think we should solve this through diplomacy."
However, Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it disapproved of the president’s remarks, warning neighboring countries that it would continue attacks if US and Israel used their territory to attack Iran.
“Following the statements of the president, the armed forces once again declare that they respect the interests and national sovereignty of neighboring countries and, up to this point, have committed no aggression against them,” the IRGC said in a statement.
“However, should the previous hostile actions continue, all military bases and interests of criminal America and the fake Zionist regime on land, at sea, and in the air across the region will be considered primary targets and will come under the powerful and crushing strikes of the mighty armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” it added.
Trump responded to the apology by posting on his Truth Social platform that Iran had "apologized and surrendered to its Middle East neighbors.”
He also said if Iran does not surrender, “it will be hit very hard!"
Pezeshkian rejected Trump's demands for unconditional surrender, calling them "a dream that they should take to their grave."
On Sunday, March 8, Iran's Assembly of Experts — the clerical body responsible for choosing a new supreme leader — elected Mojtaba Khamenei, the late leader's son, to replace his father.
