A Miss World Chile contestant surprised audiences with her unusual talent of singing death metal, going on to win the crown.

27-year-old Ignacia Fernández wowed the crowd during the pageant’s semi-final talent competition on Sunday, Nov. 2, when she performed a death metal song, surprising both the jury and fans.

Dressed in an all black dress with a sash that read “Las Condes”, representing the district she’s from, Fernández took the stage with a powerful performance.

Fernández, a model, is also the founder and singer of the progressive death metal band, Decessus, and played alongside her band member and guitarist, Carlos Palma.

In a post-show interview, Fernández revealed the performance didn’t go entirely as planned.

She said her dress ripped from behind after she bent forward to make the first guttural note, making her reach for her back, which is seen on camera.

Despite the wardrobe malfunction, Fernández's performance went viral on social media and gained standing ovations from people attending the show.

“I'm so proud that someone is finally breaking down preconceived stereotypes about what it means to be feminine,” one person wrote on social media.

Singers like Rita Ora and Ellie Goulding also praised Fernández for her performance.

After the performance, Fernández wrote on Instagram that metal has been a “fundamental” part in her life, adding that it has been “a refuge, a source of strength and purpose”.

“It was a great experience to break down barriers on broadcast television, to inspire, to be true to myself, and to show that we shouldn't fear the prejudices of others,” she added.

A week later, she was crowned Miss World Chile, beating 19 other contestants to become the first death metal singer to take the crown.
