The world's baby hippo has grown from 5 kg to 90 kg, enjoying a fruit cake as 12,000 fans came to celebrate her birthday.

Moo Deng, the beloved Thai icon, has marked her first birthday with four days of celebrations at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand’s Chon Buri province.

On July 10, more than 12,000 fans descended on the zoo to celebrate her special day with her.


Moo Deng, who has grown from 5 kg to 90 kg, enjoyed a fruit cake while everyone watched.

Moo Deng quickly went viral after her birth on July 10, 2024. As is the zoo's practice, it held a naming contest on Facebook.

On the poll, people were given the option to choose from three names: Moo Deng, which means bouncy pork in Thai, Moo Dang (red pork) and Moo Sub (minced pork).

The poll gained over 20,000 votes, and she was named Moo Deng.

To say Moo Deng took social media by storm would be an understatement.

She became an instantly relatable icon for looking distressed all the time, bringing joy to millions around the world, who have been enjoying watching her grow over the past year.

The zoo even started social media accounts dedicated to providing updates about Moo Deng.
