“50 years young and still mixing it with the very best in the world.”
Nadia Aly Fekry, a 50-year-old Egyptian powerlifter and mother of two, has made headlines after winning a bronze medal in weightlifting at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris.
Competing in the women’s above 86 kg category on Sunday, Sep. 8, Fekry lifted 141 kg on her first attempt and 145 kg on her second, marking her fourth Paralympic medal.
Her performance contributed to Egypt’s total of seven medals at the Paris Paralympic Games.
In a video of her win, Fekry is seen lifting 145 kg with ease.
As she achieved this feat, she beamed with joy while the audience erupted in cheers and applause.
The commentator could also be heard praising her, saying, “50 years young and still mixing it with the very best in the world.”
Born in Cairo, Egypt, Fekry began powerlifting in 1997.
Just a year later, she made her debut at the 1998 World Para Powerlifting Championship, winning a gold medal in the 67.5 kg category.
Following her debut, Fekry excelled in several international competitions and made her first appearance at the Summer Paralympics in Sydney in 2000, where she won a bronze medal.
Since then, she has competed in four more Paralympic Games, including the most recent Paris Games.
Fekry won a silver medal at both the Summer Paralympics in Athens in 2004 and in Beijing in 2008.
Her husband is also a Paralympian and plays sitting volleyball, but since they have two children, Fekry said he didn’t participate in the Rio and Paris Paralympics so she could join to fulfill her dream.
“He is the best man in the world,” she said in an interview with Kora Plus.
