At least 153 people have been killed after an earthquake struck remote villages in western Nepal on Friday Nov. 3.
The 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit at 11:47 p.m local time in Jajarkot, western Nepal, according to the country’s seismological center.
Authorities said 157 people have died and another 349 have been injured as of Nov. 6.
Authorities have yet to make contact with remote villages that were struck and say they expect the death toll to rise.
Reports showed that more than 17,000 homes were completely damaged, which has displaced thousands of people.
“Many houses have collapsed, many others have developed cracks. Thousands of residents spent the entire night in cold, open grounds because they were too scared to go in into the cracked houses as aftershocks struck,” an official told Reuters.
Neighboring countries, such as India, have expressed their condolences and provided aid relief.
“India stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal and is ready to extend all possible assistance,” India’s prime minister Narendra Modi said.
