Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered Israeli forces to push deeper into Lebanese territory and expand its invasion of southern Lebanon.

Israel has been striking Lebanon and issuing “leave or die” evacuation orders to parts of the country after Hezbollah retaliated for the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who Hezbollah considers its spiritual leader, by Israel and the US.

Since then, Israel pushed its ground troops further into southern Lebanon, occupying Lebanese territory and attacking Lebanon, including the capital Beirut, killing more than 1,094 people in the country and forcing hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes.

Netanyahu said in a statement on Sunday, March, 29, he instructed his military to expandan alleged “buffer zone” by invading Lebanon, claiming this is to allow them to attack Hezbollah.

“I said we would change the face of the Middle East, and we have done so. But we have also changed our security concept. We initiate, we attack, and we have created three security zones deep within enemy territory,” Netanyahu said.

He said Israel created a “security zone” in Syria from the Hermon ridge to the Yarmouk, in Gaza, controlling half of Gaza under the so-called “yellow line.”

“I have now instructed to further expand the existing security zone in order to finally thwart the threat of invasion and to push the anti-tank missile fire away from our border,” Netanyahu said.

Israeli defence minister Israel Katz gave further details, saying the intended control would extend up to the Litani River, which runs about 30km north of the Israeli border, adding that houses in villages near the border would be demolished.

Israel has destroyed multiple bridges that connect the south of the country to the rest of Lebanon.

The damage isolates people in sothern Lebanon, complicating evacuations and aid delivery.

In just two weeks, more than 250,000 people have fled Lebanon, marking a 40 percent increase since late February.

“Forcible displacement, wanton destruction and attacks deliberately targeting civilians are war crimes,” Human Rights Watch said in response to Israel’s expanding operations.

The Israeli military is currently holding positions up to 10km deep into Lebanon.

This is not Israel's first attempt at this approach. Israel occupied a similar security buffer in southern Lebanon from 1982 until 2000, when it was pushed out by Hezbollah.
