Over 700 People Are Dead In Nigeria After It Was Hit By Massive Floods Believed To Be The Worst In 60 Years

Massive floods have killed more than 200 people and left another 500 people missing and believed to be dead in Niger state in Nigeria.

Torrential rains on May 29 caused heavy flooding through Mokwa town, washing away hundreds of homes, as well as key roads and bridges.

Thousands of people were forced from their homes, more than 200 people were killed and more than 500 others remain missing but are presumed dead.

Local authorities told the BBC on Monday, June 2, that they had stopped search and rescue operations as they did not believe they would find any other missing people alive.

The flood is believed to be the worst to hit the area in 60 years.

"I have 15 family members in my household. Unfortunately, nine of them have died in the flood, and eight are still missing. Only one body has been recovered, and our house was completely washed away," Adamu Yusuf, a town resident told Reuters.

"I'm currently standing in the spot where my room used to be. I've lost everything — my wife, mother, children, and other relatives are all missing. The flood has taken everything from us," he said.

Nigeria is prone to flooding during the rainy season which starts in April, but floods have become more severe in recent years due to the climate crisis.
