The Oscars Cut Off The “KPop Demon Hunters” Team After They Won Best Original Song And People Are Upset
Boos could be heard from the audience, while viewers online called the moment “disrespectful” and “rude”.
The Oscars is facing backlash after it cut off the speech of Korean songwriter, Lee Yu-Han, after his team won Best Original Song for “Golden” from the animated film “KPop Demon Hunters”.
The mostly Korean team of Ejae, Joong Gyu-kwak, Lee Yu-Han, Seo-jeong Hoon (24), Teddy Park and Mark Sonnenblick became the first Koreans to win in the Best Original Song category at the ceremony on Sunday, March 16.
“Golden” is also the first K-Pop song to win the category.
Ejae, the 33-year-old Korean American singer and songwriter who co-wrote the track and performed the lead vocals delivered the main acceptance speech.
“Growing up, people made fun of me for liking K-pop, but now everyone’s singing our song in all the Korean lyrics,” Ejae said. “I’m so proud.”
After Ejae’s finished, she asked others in the team if they wanted to speak, prompting Lee to step forward.
“I would like to thank…” Lee started as he read from a piece of paper, before the microphone was cut and the orchestra began playing.
Ejae and Sonnenblick are seen asking for more time, but the ceremony moved on.
Boos could be heard from the audience, while viewers online called the moment “disrespectful” and “rude”, especially after actor Adrien Brody made a record long speech of nearly six minutes in 2025 after winning Best Actor for his role in “The Brutalist”.
Lee later completed his speech during an interview with the press after the ceremony.
“I'd like to thank our families, 24, my fellow IDO members and Teddy Park. This is an incredible honor” he said.
“KPop Demon Hunters” won two Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature.
