More than 500 pets of different species in the Philippines received unconventional blessings in an unconventional way unique to the age of the pandemic on Sunday Oct. 3.
At Eastwood Mall in the capital of Manila, pet owners lined up in a drive-through as a Catholic priest prayed and sprinkled holy water on the pets through the car window.
The event was held to mark World Animal Day and the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, according to Reuters.
The ceremony was held in the form of a drive-through to ensure social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Because of the pandemic I want them to be safe and healthy,” dog owner Abby Piedad told Reuters. “They are also our family and they should be blessed as well.”
On this day, animal rights and welfare are celebrated around the world.
