A Freak Hailstorm Hit Poland And The Videos Look Unreal
In just two hours, the city received 60 and 80 mm (2.3 to 3.1 inches) of rainfall.
Heavy hail battered Gniezno, a city in western Poland, on Monday, May 20, leading to flooding on streets as powerful storms swept through parts of the region.
In just two hours, the city received 60 and 80 mm (2.3 to 3.1 inches) of rainfall, Skywarn Poland reported.
The storm’s intense force overwhelmed the area’s drainage systems, causing extensive pooling of water across the region.
Videos and photos on social media showed people and cars navigating through the flooded streets, along with hailstones drifting on the water’s surface.
Several roofs were ripped off, and some people ended up stuck in submerged cars.
In one instance, a woman found herself trapped in her car due to the incessant downpour.
While speaking to local media, a firefighter said that the storm triggered several rescue operations in nearby areas and inundated several public and residential buildings, including a school, police station and a hospital.
Additionally, Gniezno’s municipal park was temporarily shut down to ensure public safety because of flooded pathways, Poland Daily 24 reported.
Elsewhere in Opole and Lublin, severe hailstorms ruined all the agricultural land, with farmers saying they are expecting a complete loss of fruit and vegetable crops.
