Pope Leo Has Said The Vatican Endorses A Two-State Solution Even If "Israel Does Not Accept" It
“We all know that that in this moment Israel does not accept that solution but we see it as the only solution that could offer a solution to a conflict that is still lived,”
Pope Leo has said that the only way to end the “conflict” between Israel and Palestine is a two-state solution.
Leo made the comments to journalists on Sunday, Nov. 30, on a flight from Turkey to Lebanon during his first in-flight press conference.
He said that the Vatican has endorsed a two-state solution, including a Palestinian independent state, even if Israel doesn’t agree to it.
“We all know that that in this moment Israel does not accept that solution but we see it as the only solution that could offer a solution to a conflict that is still lived,” Leo said, adding, “we are also friends of Israel and we try with both sides to be a voice of mediation that can help get closer to a solution with justice for all.”
However, he didn’t mention Israel’s genocide in Gaza or itc continuing strikes on Lebanon where he landed after.
The UN Security Council also passed a resolution on Tuesday, Dec. 2, calling on Israel to end its unlawful occupation of Palestinian territories and withdraw its forces from the West Bank and Gaza as well as the occupied Golan Heights.
Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu hasn’t responded the Pope’s statement but has repeatedly said that Israel opposes the establishment of a Palestinian state and that he will keep on blocking.
Meanwhile, Israel’s far-right national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has called for senior Palestinian Authority officials to be assassinated and arrested if the UN moves towards recognizing Palestine.
Meanwhile, Israel is violating the “ceasefire” in Gaza, killing more than 366 Palestinians since the ceasefire began on Oct. 10.
